EXTRAS:
Liner Notes from the 1976 U.S. first issue LP by Ben Edmonds:
By 1969, the Beach Boys’ fortune in their own back yard were
anything but enviable. America’s perennially favorite sons since
the early 60’s, they’d been casually swept under the rug by a new
musical order which expressed itself with FM airwaves and preferred to
politely avoid most everything associated with previous lives.
The Beach Boys were offering up warm and loving albums like WILD HONEY
and FRIENDS, and getting the cold shoulder.
In England, however the story was substantially different. (And
ironically so, because England’s wave of post-Beatle bands were doing
more than their share in the stateside ousting of the Beach
Boys.) The fanatic British mass they maintained had grown to be a
curious mix of intelligentsia (who loved them for their
accomplishments) and screamers (who loved them for their fun).
The Beach Boys had proven with “Good Vibrations” that fun could be art
and still be fun, too, effectively beating the underground at its own
game. England got the point.
America finally woke up, of course (irony again: with the help of
the FM dial that had initially conspired to displace them), but one is
safe in saying that were it not for quality shows like this one and an
audience to respond in kind, there might very well not have been a
Beach Boys to wake up to. The point is as it’s always been.
And in case you might’ve forgotten what it is, there are groups like
the Beach Boys and records like this to remind you.
