During the two school weeks between January 21 and February 1, a Junior Red Cross Penny Drive was held at our school. Monies from the drive have just been turned in, and as the total has not yet been ascertained, it will be in next week’s paper. A hot dog and pie sale was staged during the week, to which there was a tremendous response.
Pamphlets and entry forms have been sent away for the students who are to partake in the B.C. Forest Products Co. essay.
The FVMPA Public Speaking Contest is nearing again; the classroom eliminations are to take place during the week of February 18-22.
SPORTS
During the noon hour on; Monday, February 4, two long-distance running contests were held in the gym.
Keith Paré won the boys’ one-mile race (27 times around the gym), and Sherry Moyer won the girls’ ½-mile (14 times), the latter in a spectacular finish, coming from behind.
As a result, the winners will attend a Vancouver Canucks’ hockey team home game; transportation and tickets to the game as the prize.
A basketball league has been formed with three teams: MRJSS, Pitt Meadows Junior High, and Garibaldi. Each have a Junior Boys’ and Girls’ team and a Bantam Boys’ and Girls’ team. After the schedule has been completed, a best out of three playoff will be held, with the two top teams in each division competing for the zonal championship.
The first two games are Maple Ridge Jr. Boys and Girls at Pitt Meadows on Wednesday, February 6, and Maple Ridge Bantam boys and girls at Pitt Meadows on Thursday, February 7. The dates may be changed if transportation or weather difficulties necessitate.
